How LRS Ratings Are Created
AI-Powered Analysis
Our system uses a custom designed AI, an advanced language model, to analyze books. The AI examines:
- Book descriptions and synopses
- Publisher information and categories
- Genre classifications
- Common Sense Media standards and age-appropriate content guidelines
The Analysis Process
Our custom designed AI analyzes the book against our 8 content categories, providing detailed ratings and age recommendations with confidence scores.
Ratings with low confidence scores or user reports are flagged for expert manual review to ensure accuracy.
User feedback and manual reviews help us continuously improve the AI's accuracy and understanding of nuanced content.
The 8 LRS Categories
Each book is rated 0-5 in these categories, where 0 means not present and 5 means central theme:
Age Recommendations
Our AI determines age recommendations using a sophisticated multi-factor analysis:
- Content intensity across all 8 categories
- Vocabulary complexity and reading level
- Theme maturity and emotional depth
- Publisher age recommendations
- Category classifications (Picture Book, Middle Grade, YA, etc.)
Books are assigned to one of four age brackets: 4+, 8+, 13+, or 18+.
Our Commitment to Objectivity
We are committed to providing objective, non-judgmental information. Our ratings describe what's in a book—not whether it's "good" or "bad." Different families have different values and comfort levels, and we respect that diversity.
We do not:
- Advocate for banning or censoring books
- Make moral judgments about content
- Recommend or prohibit books for specific families
- Allow commercial influence on ratings
