The Looky Rating System describes what is in a book on a 0–5 scale — spoiler-free, consistent, and not a ban list. Story themes measure presence, not warnings.
What LRS content reviews are
BookLooky helps families see content themes before page one. Unlike movie ratings or crowd-sourced lists, LRS scores are the same 0–5 scale on every title: six Content Intensity categories and four Story Themes, plus a neutral age band such as 8+ or 13+.
We inform. We do not judge, censor, or recommend removing books from schools or libraries. Use ratings to match a book to your child’s maturity and your family’s values.
Content Intensity
Higher scores mean stronger or more frequent content.
Love & Romance
Romantic relationships, kissing, sexual content
Mental Health
Anxiety, depression, trauma, psychological struggle
Language
Profanity, slurs, explicit or crude wording
Substance Use
Alcohol, drugs, smoking, addiction themes
Fear
Horror, dread, frightening imagery, intense suspense
Story Themes (not warnings)
Higher scores mean the theme is more central to the story — not that the book is less appropriate.
Fantasy
Magic, supernatural, enchanted worlds
LGBTQ+ Representation
How central LGBTQ+ characters or identity themes are to the plot
Sci-Fi / Futuristic
Space, future tech, aliens, robots
Disability & Neurodiversity
Disability, chronic illness, or neurodiversity representation
How to use a review
- Search a title or scan a cover on a phone.
- Read the age band and the 0–5 tiles — intensity vs story themes are labeled separately.
- Check whether the rating is an AI catalog estimate or an official full-text scan.
