Description
October 14, 1066. Night fell quickly at battle's end--black, moonless night, as cold and desolate as the furthermost corner of purgatory . . . King Harold is dead. William of Normandy will now wear the crown of England. Meanwhile, by flickering torchlight, Edith Swan-neck, Harold's common-law wife, accompanied by Rowan, her young waiting-lady, searches the battlefield for the dead king's mutilated body . . . and the body of young Wulfgar, his thane, who fought beside him.
