Description
America is in the midst of a values crisis. Our inherited value system-based on fear of reprisal or rejection-has lost its sanctions. While almost everyone breathes the proverbial sigh of relief that society is becoming less repressive, we also have the uneasy feeling that we do not know where to go from here. Conflicting schools of psychology agree on little, yet one area is subject to widespread agreement. Human character and personality are largely shaped by the earliest years of childhood. If our nation (and world) is to find its way out of the values crisis, the solution must come in those areas that most directly affect the development of children- home, TV, church, and school. Society must have values. So must each individual- not only to function in society but to have a personal sense of meaning and significance. The only possible solution is in the hands of those who shape our children. Values and Moral Development in Children speaks directly to current needs and possibilities. It lays a firm theoretical foundation, but it also deals directly in the practical- what should be done, who should do it, how. This is a book for all parents and all who look forward to parenthood. It is for all others- in church, kindergarten, and school-who work with children. It is a source of help and of hope. Carl A. Elder has written Values and Moral Development in Children on the basis of extensive training and experience in the fields of childhood education and religion. By combining these particular specialties, he has exceptional qualifications for speaking in this significant and difficult field. Presently, he works as a minister in the Dallas suburb of Plano. He speaks and conducts workshops widely, however, in the area of children's moral development. Among his previous books is nationally used Value Judgements: Decisions for Today. This book and other work are related to value education in public schools. His educational background includes study at Southwestern Baptist Seminary, North Texas State University, Akron University, and Kent State University. Elder and his wife are parents of three children in the young adult and teen years.
