Naval commander John Paul Jones-"I have not yet begun to fight!"-was one of American history's most colorful yet under-rated figures. Considered by 20th century historians to be the "Father of the United States Navy," Jones, a Scotsman with a fiery temper and high (work) expectations for his crew, was a self-educated thinker who understood what the Continental Navy would need to accomplish to be of use during the Revolutionary War. Although Jones delighted the colonials with his daring raids on British ships and his ability to succeed in battles others would have certainly lost, he faced discrimination because of his Scottish ancestry, and this inevitably took its toll on the daring seaman. While the story of John Paul Jones is itself quite interesting, this text provides useful information on why men like Jones found themselves in certain situations during those turbulent times. Ingram does a solid job detailing the history of the revolution, even as he highlights Jones. The contextualization of Jones within the war is further aided by well-chosen illustrations and photographs positioned throughout the book. I highly recommend this book as one from which students will learn a great deal in a highly enjoyable manner.
