In 1951, Steve Calrk accepts a teaching job in a one-room school in the Missouri Ozarks. He and his pregnant wife Lacey move to the isolated backwoods community of Indian Glade, to discover a place where everyone speaks in Elizabethan terms and lives by old customs and beliefs. The Clarks find a beautiful empty house to rent but are forewarned by the locals that "The last folks lived there claimed it weren't natural ..."
