This story was told to me in Paeroa after I met John at the Elim Church. John was a fiery Scotsman, headed the New Zealand Christian Writers Guild and was a Bible Teacher in the local school. He lived in a magnificent house on a high hill overlooking the town - a house he built.After having fallen out with Church folk, John sold up and bought the property in Thames - and a vacant lot on a hill at Ngarimu Bay on the road to Coromandel - which was a mere 15-minute drive due north of Thames.
