Until recently the social work profession was much smaller, less formal and much less diverse; today it has grown to become a large and influential profession. In 1967 there were less than 5,000 accredited master of social work degrees awarded, by 1992, there were more than 40,000, and the number of people awarded a doctorate has more than quadrupled in the past 30 years.
